Chrysler just gave walking papers to 10 of its African American dealers on June 9, and new car sales continue to fall. But according to Jet magazine, Mark McNeil, a Penn State dropout, has found a way to thrive despite slumping car sales.
McNeil, 37, left school after two years, turning his love for cars into a business concept. No, he didn't sink his life savings into a dealership, but he's into renting high-end luxury vehicles. His business jumped off when someone agreed to pay him $15,000 to rent one of his personal Bentleys. At that time, he had what Oprah calls a light bulb moment, realizing he could make money pushing high-end rides.
While most folks are cash strapped and unable to access credit in this tight economy, McNeil is finding a way to floss, renting his fleet of vehicles for rap videos, weddings and proms. His fleet consist of the Aston Martin DB9 Volanta, Bentley Continental GT, Jaguar XKR supercharged convertible, Maserati Gran Turismo, Jaguar XF, Rolls Royce Phantom and Ranger Rover HSE, to a name a few.
To get a feel for what McNeil's clients pay, I checked out his Web site. According to the site, www.premierluxuryrentals.net, a client interested in cruising in a $105,000 Mercedes-Benz S550 with the AMG sport package can rent the vehicle during the week for approximately $500 a day or on the weekend for $600 a day. The daily mileage cap is 100 miles. And if that's not enough miles, you can pay 75 cents per additional mile. And for those folks on a tight budget, McNeil's company offers a weekly special of $2,995. Yep, that seems to fit my budget. What about yours?
In addition to offering luxury cars, McNeil also provide yachts, jets and luxury homes. Maybe some of the dealers who were cut recently should take a lesson. This brother has managed to hit the jackpot in a downturn, turning high-end rentals into cash cow.
